The humanistic perspective caused many of tests to be made. The most known test is the Q-sort test. This test uses 100 cards to figure out someone’s personality. There is a character trait on each card and the person is to say if that trait is like them or not and then you put the cards into rows of 9, with one being very unlike the person. The person then has to sort the cards as shown on the left and this shows which traits describe the person and how much more or less that they describe them. This test shows personality based on self-analysis.
The biggest criticism focuses on the lack of treatment to certain problems. The concept of the theory is basically free will so it is hard to treat this and also the researchers can’t seem to study if the tests are effective or not. Another point of criticism is the fact that this can help people with minor personality problems but is not effective when it comes to people with more severe problems, like schizophrenia. |
Rogers |
Carl Rogers believes that empathy, genuineness, and acceptance are needed for a person to grow. He said that personalities of people will not develop like they should without these things. Rogers believed that self actualization took place as every person was able to reach their goals and desires.

Maslow |
Self-actualization is the idea that we "can be the best we can be". Maslow thought the ultimate goal of humanity is for each one of us to be focused on fulfilling our own potential. If we are motivated in life by the idea that we should self-actualize, then everything else would just work out. It would not matter how much money we made, or who had the bigger house. If each one of us just strived to be the best we could be, then happiness would follow. Maslow latter realized that only very few people have actually reached this level of happiness and enlightenment.
Many examples show how the humanistic perspective shows people who come from nothing to make study hard, put themselves through school, and be successful not in a wealth of money sense but in a happiness sense to know that they overcame all of the obstacles life had. People who believe is Maslow’s idea and apply it to their lives show personality development and growth in learning or situational factors. |
